Aleksander and Raisa
It is wet and cold and Aleksander doesn’t know what to do. He walks through this neighborhood he has never seen before and looks at a yellow shop with a pink pig in the logo. It has been a long trip and he has become very hungry, Aleksander hasn’t had anything to eat for a while.
It all started in Albania three months ago. Aleksander was playing with his siblings in the garden. Their parents came home early and said that they had to go to a safe place to hide. The children didn’t know what was happening but followed their parents when they saw how stressed and scared they were.
When they arrived in Himara, a town in Albania, which was supposed to be safe, everything was opposite to safe. People were shouting and crying all over the place. So the trip went on. They took trains, buses, boats and cars all over Europe. They travelled in small, uncomfortable places and they didn’t know where they were at the time. After two weeks of travelling they arrived in Galicia and went to a harbour where they had heard that a boat could take them to a safer place.
Aleksander and his family had been travelling in a dark engine room where they didn’t know what was happening outside. After some time they were so hungry that they had to send someone outside the engine room to look for food because it was too dangerous to go all together. Aleksanders’ parents decided that he should be the one to go because he was the oldest and they had to watch his siblings.
When Aleksander goes outside he sees that they are in a harbour so he decides to go to the town and get some food from there. When he’s on the way to the boat again he notices that it’s gone. His parents, siblings, everyone is gone. He runs to the end of the harbour to see if he isn’t just imagining things. When he reaches the end he sees the boat slowly going out of sight. He falls on his knees and realizes that he is now in this all alone. Running away from something that he doesn’t know what is.
It’s raining and Raisa runs around the corner towards a yellow shop. The tears fall down her cheeks but nobody notices because off the rain. Suddenly she runs into something, Aleksander. She can’t see anything at first because of the tears that are blinding her. She falls down on the street. She hits her head on the sidewalk and starts to see black dots, her sight blurs. All the memories come flooding back to her.
She sees herself getting out off her car and walking toward the house. She remembers that moment really well. It happened three weeks ago. It was a good moment until she opened the door to the house. In the living room she sees her husband and sister. She usually is very glad when she sees her loved ones at home together. But this time it was different. Her husband and sister sat in the sofa, kissing. She felt betrayed, went out of the house and drove off. She had been driving around for a long time before she came home again. When she entered the house she saw her husband in the kitchen sitting by himself. On the table she saw the wine glasses standing by themselves. The red lipstick on one of the glasses shone in the moonlight. She walked straight up the stairs and went to bed silently. The next morning she felt like talking, went downstairs and looked for her husband. She couldn’t find him anywhere. She remembered that feeling very well when she thought he had gone off with her sister. It was afternoon when her phone started ringing. She picked it up right away. The news came as big shock. There had been a big car accident and her husband didn’t survive it. She didn’t know what to do and decided to take the first flight to Iceland to clear her mind.
Aleksander sits besides Raisas’ bed at the hospital. His wet clothes lie on the chair across him and he has a blanket around his shoulders. Aleksander looks at Raisa and thinks how peaceful she is, this woman that he doesn’t even know. In his mind he wishes that he could be as peaceful as she is. Suddenly Raisa starts to move and Aleksander feels relieved because now he knows that he didn’t kill her. A moment later Raisa wakes up.
The headache hits her like a hammer as she tries to pull herself up. Raisa sees a little boy next to her bed. Wait, is she imagining things, Raisa thinks. The boy looks cold and starving. The sympathy comes to Raisa as she sees the boy. Then she starts looking around the room wondering where she is. She stands up and walks towards the boy.
Then she asks, “are you lost?”
Aleksander looks terrified. He doesn’t understand a word. Of course not, he doesn’t even speak English.
“It’s okay to be scared,” says Raisa. Raisa walks out of the room. A moment later she comes back with a plate of food and a nurse walking behind her. Aleksander eats the food really quickly.
The next morning Raisa books a hotel room for her and Aleksander to stay at.
Raisa opens the door to the hotel room and lets Aleksander go in first. The boy looks amazed about how big and beautiful the room is. The sit down in the sofa and Raisa points at herself saying her name. Then she points at Aleksander and asks him to say his name. Aleksander doesn’t understand at first but then says his name.
Raisa helps Aleksander a lot over the next few months. She helps him find a new family, go to school and survive in this new life. After a few months Raisa goes back home. She has now cleared her mind. Her sister waits for her at the airport. She apologies and tries to save their relationship. Raisa doesn't want a new relationship and after that they never meet again.
Aleksander isn't doing so great in life. He had to run away from his foster family.
Raisa decides to go back to Iceland to check on Aleksander. When she comes to Iceland she hears that Aleksander is no longer with his foster family so she goes to look after him. She decides to get some food first for both her and Aleksander when she finds him. Bónus, the supermarket, is right across the street and she starts to walk towards it. On the way there someone bumps on her shoulder and says he is sorry in Icelandic. Raisa turn around and they both freeze. It is Aleksander. They hug each other and cry.
After that Raisa moves to Iceland and they become one big, happy family.
