The Two
Ólafur was walking downtown looking for a peaceful place to study. He had a lot of school work to do. As he was walking he spotted his favourite cafe and decided to go there. He sat down in the corner, took out his laptop and school papers and started working. Hours went by and he still had a lot to do but the door opens and that catches his attention. A young lady comes in and looks around. She has a suitcase with her and is wearing a long coat and a big hat. She seems confused. Ólafur watches carefully after her as she walks towards the counter. She starts to order but Ólafur notices that she was having a hard time with it. He’s near the counter so he hears what’s going on. She doesn’t speak the language he thinks, she has probably never been to Norway before.
The girl gets frustrated, sighs and starts mumbling something.
Ólafur overhears her mumbles, he notices it to be in Finnish. Maybe I can help her? He thinks, I know some Finnish language after all. He gets up and goes to the counter. “Do you need help” he asked in Finnish. She nodded. He got her order and went back to his seat.
A few moments passed and Ólafur saw the girl walking towards him. She seemed nervous and walked slowly.
“Hey, is this seat taken?” she asked as soon as she got close enough.
Ólafur looked up from his computer, acting like he didn’t know that she was here. “No I wasn’t expecting anyone”.
She sits down and they start talking.
“Hi my name is Aino and I come from Finland, I just moved here yesterday.”
“Hi Aino, my name is Ólafur Þór.”
“How long have you lived here?”
“I just moved here one year ago. I study at a college here in Oslo.”
They talked for a while. She told him that she needed to move away from her home because she had a hard life.
She was born in Rautalampi, a small town in Savonia, and grew up there. The town didn’t have very good chances for youngsters to get a job. Since her mother died, and her father left them when she was young, she needed to move to her aunt who lived in Petrozavodsk in Russia. She was very poor and Aino didn´t have the nicest time there. She worked every day for 9 hours as a cook at a restaurant. She had a goal to move to Norway and study there so she started to save money for that.
After a while of talking, Ólafur points out: “You don’t speak the language very well, maybe I could teach you more of it”. Aino approves for that gladly and they planned on their next meeting in the terms of Aino’s journey to learn Norwegian.
Few days passed by and the two of them met again in the exact same cafe where they met few days ago. They picked the most quiet corner, so they could have their peace for learning.
Ólafur was also struggling with Finnish language, but both of them managed to understand and communicate with each other.
Hours went by and the day soon turned to evening. “It’s been a long day for both of us, but I am glad to see how quick you learn!” Ólafur said. Aino smiled brightly for the positive out back she was given.
They started to do this regularly and Aino got better at Norwegian. Aino got a house and a job in the city. She is a main chef at a french restaurant; One time Aino was walking around the city and saw a poster, looking for chefs to work. Aino has always been good with food and got the job right away.
Aino has lived in the city for two year now, some nights Aino stayed up late thinking about her family, feeling lonely in her apartment. When she is lonely she calls Ólafur and they talk for hours. Months passed and Aino and Ólafur kept in touch, they decided to move in together.
Aino packs her bags and moves to Ólafur’s place.
They live a very happy life. Everything goes like in a story, Ólafur has graduated and Aino still works at the restaurant. One night as Aino was closing the restaurant, an older lady walks into the restaurant.
“I’m sorry we’re closed” Aino said and walked towards her. As she got closer she realized this was her aunt Milla. The one she lived with in Russia. Aino was so happy so she ran to her and hugged her. Milla told her that she needs her help back in Petrozavodsk.
“I’m sorry, but I have already started a whole new life here, I can’t go back.” Aino said, looking a little sad.
Few days later her aunt goes back to Russia and Aino continues her life in Oslo. She feels really bad for saying no to her aunt and tells Ólafur that she is going to move back to her aunt in Russia. Ólafur gets really sad but he understands.
Aino moved to Russia and decided to move back to Oslo after 3 months.
After 3 months Ólafur was very excited to meet Aino again. He went to the airport an waited. She didn’t come. He gets a call from Milla saying Ainos plane crashed and she would not make it back.
