The survivor
There once was a girl named Olivia. She lived in Karelia with her family.
She had 2 younger sisters and 1 older brother, they lived a happy life in Karelia until the war came and ruined everything.
One day Olivia was helping her mom with the cooking, so that the family could eat. While they were cooking they heard a strange buzzing noise outside. Olivia and her mom looked outside their kitchen window but didn’t see anything, so they walked outside and looked up, they saw 6 airplanes flying in a triangle. Olivia got scared so her mom hugged her and said that everything was going to be okay.
Until They heard something, it was like something was falling down, they looked up and saw a bomb fall beside their house.
Olivia screamed and shouted her brothers, dad and sisters name while crying. Her mom was so shocked that she didn’t even say a word. They ran to their house to check if everyone was okay. The house was so damaged and dusty that they barely saw anything.
“LEENA, ANTON, EEVA, DAD” “WHERE ARE YOU!?!” they shouted, and didn’t get a reply so Olivia and her mom got scared, they ran to Olivia’s siblings’ bedroom and opened their door to see that there was nothing left of it. Olivia and her mom screamed because they knew that they were all in their bedrooms. The walls had fallen down so you could see the sky. They saw one of the bed’s and tried to get to it but it was hard because there were so many bricks on the ground.
They helped each other getting the bricks off the ground, after a while they saw a hand sticking out, they were so happy but scared at the same time. They hurried taking the bricks off until they saw Anton’s face, they pulled him out and tried to listen to his heartbeat but couldn’t hear anything.
Olivia and her mom started crying and hugged each other.
They continued to try and find everyone else but didn’t have any luck, so they gave up. Olivia and her mom decided to leave and check if there were some people in the neighbourhood who survived, so they started to walk but Olivia thought she heard something and gripped her mom’s hand “I heard something” Olivia said. They listened intently and didn’t make a sound. “Eee” There I heard it again! “EEE” they heard even louder, “LEENA, EEVA, DAD, WHERE ARE YOU!!” Olivia and her mom said. “IM HEeere” they heard. They ran to the bedroom where they found Anton and heard it even louder “IM HERE” until they saw a finger picking through the bricks, they ran and took the bricks off as fast as they could. They finally saw Eeva’s face and she was alive. Olivia and her mom started crying happy tears and were smiling and laughing at the same time. They got her out and hugged her so tight that Eeva couldn’t even breath. They were so happy to see each other, but their mom told them that they should hurry and go before anything else happens.
Olivia hurried to the kitchen and grabbed all the clean food that were in the cabinets which wasn’t a lot of food. So, they left their house and walked to the closest house to check if someone was there, “Is someone here!?”
No one answered so they checked the next house but no one was there either. So, they walked all the way to the train station and finally saw people. They asked where the people were going and they said that they were going to Jyväskylä which was in middle Finland because it was safe there.
They got into the train which was not a people’s train, it was more like a train for animals and for shipping stuff to other places. They got into a section were people who took their animals with were so it was a little bit hotter than the other sections were but still super cold. Eeva really needed to pee but the train was almost leaving so her mom and Eeva got out of the train to pee, Olivia got stressed if they wouldn’t make it.
But then the train started moving and Olivia looked out and called her mother’s and sisters name but didn’t see them nor got a reply. The train started going faster and faster but then she heard her mom scream Olivia’s name so Olivia ran to the door and looked outside and there was her mom and Eeva running to the train but couldn’t make it so they screamed “WE LOVE YOU” and Olivia started crying and one of the Finnish evacuees who was an old woman started hugging Olivia while she was crying and told her that everything was going to be okay and that she was safe now.
When Olivia arrived to middle Finland, Jyväskylä. It was pretty cold there and lot of snow. She went to live with some family she didn’t know. The family didn’t make her feel welcome. Olivia spent lot of time elsewhere and one day she was in park. She was sitting on a bench staring the ground when someone sat next to her. Olivia looked up and saw a boy who was her age. The boy smiled to Olivia and extended his hand.
“Hi! I’m Jussi. Who are you?” the boy, Jussi, asked.
“Hi, I am Olivia. How old are you?”
“I’m seventeen, you?”
“Okay, I am fifteen years old”, Olivia told, “so what are you doing here?”
“I was just walking and then I saw you and wanted to come over and talk to you”, Jussi told and smiled.
“Oh okay” Olivia said.
“Why you are alone?” Jussi asked.
“Well, I lost my family and I don’t have friends here. I am new here and we just moved here.” Olivia said and was little bit sad.
“Okay, I understand. I have lived here my whole life.”
“Oh really? Have you many friends here?”
“No, not really” Jussi said and looked little bit upset.
“So, then we have something in common.”
“Yes” Jussi said and looked little bit happier.
Jussi and Olivia started meeting every day and they spent more and more time together. They spent the days walking around the city, drinking coffee and talking about everything they could think about. The other people avoided them and didn’t really talk to them. They were thinking that should they move somewhere else because life in Jyväskylä wasn’t great anymore. They didn’t spent time with other people and they were often together. After couple of months they decided to move to Juuka. They packed their stuff and started their trip to Juuka.
While they were moving to Juuka they saw soldiers and got scared, the soldiers saw them and said “Hi” and asked them where they were going.
Olivia and Jussi told them that they were going to eastern Finland. The soldiers said “okay”.
Jussi asked the soldiers “where are you going?”. The soldiers told them that they were going home for a short holiday and they started going through their backpacks. “Here is some food and drinks for you” they said and gave them some bread and water. Olivia and Jussi accepted the food and thanked the kind soldiers. They wished them good luck and continued their way to eastern Finland while the soldiers headed to their homes.
After some days they arrived to Juuka and they went to live some family again. This time the family was very friendly and made them feel welcome. In Juuka most of the people were really kind and nice. There were also many other Karelian evacuees. They had many common things like language, culture and religion.
Life in Juuka was really easy and after some months they decided to build their own house. It was hard but other people in Juuka helped them. After the house was ready they moved there and started living there. Soon Olivia and Jussi got together and after two years being together they got married. They started a family and grew old together.
