We had no idea what was coming
It isn’t safe anymore. This war has killed so many people and I don’t want to be one of them. Me and my family ran to the train station to buy tickets to somewhere, but we didn't find any. We had to leave right away so we jumped on to the train and hide in the back where they keep the luggage. As we were hiding a man saw us and asked what we were doing in a very frustrating way, we told him our story and how the situation is at our home and he kindly bought a ticket for me and my family.
The man and his daughter are going to Sweden and we talked a lot on the train. When the train finally arrived in Sweden Helga's dad wanted to bring us with them back to Iceland and offered us a room at his hotel. We hurried up trying to find a fake passport it was super hard to find someone who could make one but we went to a shady neighborhood and we got it.
We took a plane from Sweden to Iceland and went to the hotel. My parents got a job at the hotel and saved up for an apartment. After 3 years in Iceland, I had made some friends and I and Helga were very close.
I was in a good school and I graduated from high school. 2 years later when I finally thought that I found a good place to live there was a huge hurricane and we had to leave our homes as quickly as we could my family and Helga’s family and other people went on a boat together. I remember how scared we were. We didn't know where we were going. Then the weather changed very stormily and the boat was shaking a lot. People started to worry and someone even fell into the ocean. Everyone called 911 but of course, there wasn't a connection. My family and Helga got an idea to go to an emergency boat. We tried to find Helga's dad but we didn't see him. We needed to hurry so we didn't have time to look for him anymore. So we went in the boat and we were going to go to Sweden it was a very long trip and very hard because we had a small boat and the ocean was very stormy. When we finally arrived we found out we actually went to England.
But we liked England so we decided to move there. We stayed at a shelter for evacuees and Helga was trying to find out what happened to her dad since we didn’t hear anything from him. One month later we find out that 15 people have died from the boat we were on and we assumed that Helga's dad was one of them. Helga was devastated and it was a hard time for her and also for my family since he was a very good friend to us and helped us when we needed a place to stay. We still had some money from our work in Iceland so we rented out a place in London. One day we saw a familiar man walking on the streets. I didn't remember where I have seen him before. The man was yelling our names and then Helga noticed that it was her dad.
He told us how he got out of the boat and went in another boat that went to Denmark.
Now it's 2007 and I am 40 years old and I still live in London with Helga. We own an evacuee place where we help those who are in need of a place to stay. And we tell our story to others. We are happy here but of course, we would like to go back to Finland and reunite with the rest of my family, but I am not ready to leave because of the evacuee place we own.
